BLOOD LIBEL
Blood Libel: One of the Oldest and Deadliest Antisemitic Tropes
The Blood Libel is the false accusation that Jews murder non-Jews — especially Christian children — to use their blood for religious rituals, particularly in the baking of Passover matzah. This medieval myth is one of the most persistent and dangerous antisemitic tropes in history. For over 800 years, it has incited violence, massacres, and expulsions against Jewish communities.
Despite being repeatedly debunked as a complete fabrication, the blood libel continues to resurface in different forms even today.
Origins and History
The first recorded blood libel accusation occurred in 1144 in Norwich, England. A boy named William was found dead, and local Jews were falsely blamed for crucifying him in a mockery of Jesus’ death. The story spread rapidly.
Over the following centuries, similar accusations exploded across Europe:
-
1190s–1300s: Accusations in France, Germany, Spain, and Italy claimed Jews needed Christian blood for Passover rituals or to cure diseases.
-
1475: The Trent blood libel in Italy — a boy named Simon was found dead, and the entire Jewish community was tortured and executed based on forced confessions. This case was widely publicized and became a template for future libels.
-
19th–20th centuries: The myth spread to Eastern Europe and the Middle East. The most infamous case was the 1903 Kishinev Pogrom in Russia, triggered in part by blood libel rumors. Similar accusations appeared in Damascus (1840), Polná (Czech lands, 1899), and even in the Soviet Union during certain periods.
In total, historians have documented over 150 documented blood libel cases in Europe between the 12th and 20th centuries, resulting in thousands of Jewish deaths, forced conversions, and expulsions.
The Core Lie
The accusation is biologically, religiously, and historically impossible:
-
Jewish law (kashrut) strictly forbids the consumption of blood. Jews are required to drain blood from meat and salt it thoroughly.
-
The Torah explicitly prohibits murder and the consumption of blood (Leviticus 17:10–14).
-
No Jewish religious text or ritual has ever called for the use of human blood.
Despite this, the myth persisted because it was emotionally powerful. It transformed Jews from neighbors into demonic figures who allegedly preyed on Christian children — the ultimate moral inversion.
How the Trope Evolved
-
Medieval version: Jews kill Christian children for Passover matzah.
-
Early modern version: Jews use blood for magical or medicinal purposes.
-
Modern mutations:
-
“Organ harvesting” conspiracies (especially after October 7, 2023)
-
Claims that Israel or “Zionists” kidnap children for rituals
-
QAnon-style “adrenochrome” and “global pedophile ring” theories that often carry antisemitic undertones
-
Why the Blood Libel Is So Dangerous
The blood libel is not just a historical curiosity — it is a murderous trope. It has directly inspired:
-
Massacres and pogroms
-
Expulsions of entire Jewish communities
-
Blood libel trials and torture
-
Modern conspiracy theories that justify violence against Jews
Even today, blood libel accusations appear on social media, in some Middle Eastern media, and in certain activist circles, often rephrased as “Israelis harvest Palestinian organs” or “Zionists sacrifice children.”
The Truth
No credible evidence has ever been found to support any blood libel accusation in over 800 years of history. Every documented case has been proven false — usually based on torture-extracted confessions, rumors, or political manipulation.
The blood libel reveals more about the accusers than the accused. It is a projection of society’s deepest fears and hatreds onto a vulnerable minority.
Conclusion
The blood libel is not an isolated medieval superstition. It is a foundational antisemitic myth that has adapted across centuries while keeping the same core message: Jews are not fully human — they are predators who harm children for ritualistic or selfish purposes.
Recognizing the blood libel in its old and new forms is essential to fighting antisemitism today.
